A Glowing Achievement:
The Royal Canadian Mint recently launched the CN Tower 50 Years/Ans Two Dollar Coin. Carl’s design includes a four colour illustration depicting Toronto’s evolving skyline. This mass circulation edition also has a unique glow-in-the-dark feature. Read about the design process at Mint.ca.
Juror’s Choice Award(s):
‘12 Local Warblers Banded at PEPtBO’ won Juror’s choice award at Art in the County and The Art Gallery of Northumberland.
Carl has enjoyed a successful career spanning more than 30 years, producing conceptual illustration for books, newspapers and magazines. Carl’s award-winning work is published in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Canadian Geographic (infographics), and others. Working with Kids Can Press, he has two fully illustrated children’s books - Wild Bridges and Buildings and The Science of Song: How and Why We Make Music. He teaches information-based illustration courses at Sheridan College, including a ‘citizen scientist’ workshop for fourth year students, focused on an appreciation of science and community involvement.
Carl’s practice combines collage, screen printing, painting, pattern and woodworking, creating works built upon strong concept and design. Recent shows include Ganaraska Art in Port Hope, and the John M. Parrott Gallery in Belleville, Ontario.
Carl Wiens lives in Belleville, Ontario and enjoys exploring the Bay of Quinte area by bicycle, kayak, and hiking. Interests include bird watching, gardening, and foraging for mushrooms.
