A year in review

Looking forward to 2023, I have some projects in the works and as I'm sure with almost everyone else, happy to close the door on 2022.

I just booked some new beer label illustration, a gallery show and am in the middle of another large painting. While the world is turning to AI, I'm looking to get back to my roots, to images and projects that inspire and create energy.

Here's a quick snapshot of personal and commissioned work:

Selling my first large painting was a real boost, but also a challenge to keep moving in that direction. I absolutely love working large, and have a workable studio space.

One of my favourite assignments was for North Caroline State, on the role of technology in advancing agriculture. The University recently built a new plant sciences centre complete with a rooftop greenhouse. Here are some illustrations from the feature:

Isometric Study: Toy Robots

This series is part of a larger project. I decided to use an isometric perspective on these, it gives me freedom to arrange them in any order as well as create patterns in a larger composition. If that doesn't sound clear, I apologize. Stay tuned for updates on this project.

Doing personal work, part of my digital skectchbook, drives the work i do and feeds creativity. When things slow down, these projects keep me sharp and focused. Excited to work with this and see it through to finish.

Defekt

Here's some newly published work. Always a treat to see my work in print, and cover assignments are the best.

I've worked with Tor.com on short story assignments and a cover for Finna, with designer Christine Foltzer. The book spawned this sequel, both books written by Nino Cipri. The series is a multidimensional romp through a Swedish multinational box store.

Finna is a magical anti-capitalist adventure that crosses dimensions, abolishes gender binaries, and liberates retail workers. Reading it is a goddamn delight.” —Annalee Newitz

Experiments and Orphans

I create mechanisms without purpose that serve no apparent function. It's a process, tied deeply into a search for something undiscovered.

It feeds and informs my work, weaving into completely unrelated assignments, illustrations, and prints. Some of these never see print or publication and are 'orphans'.

Here are a number of recent pieces that emerged from the process. A number of these are from the 'Heavy Thinkers' series, based on old dynamo diagrams, discovered in a dusty old set of instruction manuals.

A kiss on the cheek

A bit of fun from a recent assignment.
